8 Azkals to make up PH team to SEA Games

Eight members of the Philippine Azkals national football team will make up the core of the national under-23 squad which will see action in the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar this December.

The coaching staff will tap the services of the Angeles brothers, Marvin and Marwin, along with Jeffrey Christiaens, Matthew Uy, Jason de Jong, Fil-Germans Manny and Mike Ott, and Fil-British goalie Neil Etheridge.

The rest of the squad will be selected during a three-day tryout for various national teams, which the Philippine Football Federation will

Little Azkals to battle Chelsea FC on Jan. 25

AFTER the cancellation of their three friendly matches against Singapore last December, the Little Azkals, or the Philippine Under 14 national football team, will go up against the Chelsea FC U14 squad on Jan. 25 in Manila.

Little Azkals team manager Richard Montayre said Chelsea FC’s management wanted the match earlier but he had to move it due to the Sinulog festivities. They also needed time to get the permission of the boys’ respective schools as they want team members coming from Visayas and Mindanao to be there at least two days earlier for team bonding and practice.

They would not have needed to be in Manila early if the training camp scheduled last December had pushed through, Montayre said.

Philippine national men’s football team skipper Chieffy Caligdong will be staying in the Philippines to play football after all.

The Azkals hero, who earlier announced that he was considering migrating to the United States with his family, will be transferring to Green Archers United Globe in the United Football League after getting his discharge from Philippine Air Force last month.

“Green Archers FC and Globe Telecom have come to an agreement with Chieffy for him to play with our club starting with the PFF Smart Championships later this

Azkals go scoreless anew, crash out of Suzuki Cup with loss to Singapore

A Khairul Amri strike at the 18th minute spelled doom for the Philippines, as the Azkals end their 2012 Suzuki Cup run with a defeat in the hands of the Singaporeans, 1-0.

The Philippines took to the field against Singapore to a chorus of boos and ultimately couldn’t silence the crowd as they were knocked out in the Semi Finals of the Suzuki Cup against an old foe. Singapore opened the scoring in the 19th minute with Khairul Amri grabbing his 14th goal for the Lions, catching Ed Sacapano unaware and curling into the bottom corner.

The rest of the match proved to be much of a stalemate, with neither side creating another clear goal-scoring opportunity. The Philippines made two late changes after Chieffy Caligdong came on at halftime, but the impressive Philippine defense seemed to cut into the attacking options for the Azkals as they offered little in offense.

MANILA, Philippines – Fil-Danish Jerry Lucena is set to rejoin the Azkals and add maturity and stability in the midfield, something that was glaringly missing, especially in the first half, in the Philippines’ scoreless draw with Singapore in the first leg of the AFF Suzuki Cup semifinal leg 1 in Manila last Saturday.

Lucena, absent in the Azkals’ historic home game at Rizal Memorial due to club commitment, meets up with his teammates today in Singapore, giving him enough time to shake off jet lag and link up with the rest of the Azkals in time for Wednesday night’s second leg at Jalan Besar Stadium.

“Having Jerry Lucena in the second leg will definitely give us more proposition in midfield and build ‘kalma’ (calm) in buildup time,” said Azkals coach Michael Weiss.

Just like their male counterparts (The Azkals), The Malditas brought pride to the country last night as they defeated the California COSMOS to become the champions of the inaugural LA Viking Cup.

“Today was historic for Philippine football. The Men’s National Team won the Peace Cup, the first in over 100 years. Now the Women’s National Team followed suit by winning our first ever international tournament. We have taken the first step to Malditas015!”, said Ernie Nierras, head coach of the Malditas.

During the match, the COSMOS struck first from a goal by Maria Larazabal. But the Malditas countered back with a penalty kick goal from Marisa Park. The game would finish 1-1 after

There was more good news for the Philippines just a day after their morale-boosting 1-0 victory over Singapore with team manager Dan Palami telling local media that several overseas-based players would be available for the AFF Suzuki Cup.

Palami said that Angel Guirado, Paul Mulders, Dennis Cagara and Jerry Lucena had been given releases by their clubs.

It was reported earlier that striker Guirado’s participation in the biennial Asean Football Championship had been blocked by his Indian club Salgaocar but Palami said there had been a change of heart.

Neil Etheridge puts Bristol Rovers before Philippines duty

The Bristol Post

Bristol Rovers on-loan goalkeeper Neil Etheridge will turn down the chance to represent the Philippines at an international tournament later this month in order to help the club move away from the wrong end of the League Two table.

Etheridge, who has been capped 38 times and is the first-choice goalkeeper for the country of his mother’s birth, was expected to feature at the ASEAN Football Championships, which is scheduled to take place in Thailand and Malaysia between November 24 and December 22.

The Fulham loanee, who is scheduled to return to Craven Cottage at the end of December, could have potentially missed six games due to his involvement, but Rovers boss Mark McGhee confirmed yesterday: “Neil has decided he won’t be going to the tournament.
